99% of Primary Students in Gulu, Uganda Can’t Read or Count

Ugandan media has reported the results of a recent survey which found that 99% of primary school children in Gulu district (northern Uganda) cannot read or count.

School officials have blamed the low scores on overcrowded classrooms, “poor attitudes” of teachers, and absenteeism.

Patience Aber detailed the results of the survey:

The survey showed that at P.3 level, only 1% of the children were able to comprehend a P.2 story text, while 20% were not able to identify letters and 70% could only identity letters and words.

At P.7 level, 88% were able to comprehend a P.2 story text, while 4% of the pupils could only read single words.
