Children examine books freshly shipped from America in 2002

The Acholi Literacy Project was created to address the overwhelming need for books and other learning aids in Northern Uganda.  Decades of war have left a crumbling educational system, and most libraries are non-functioning or under-supplied with books and other resources.

Working with organizations and schools in America, books, science equipment, teacher training aids and other resources are collected and shipped to Northern Uganda, providing children and adults access to books and other learning resources.

KEY PROJECTS

  • Book and educational resource drives in America for shipping to Uganda
  • Creation of permanent community libraries in all four Acholi Districts (Amuru, Gulu, Kitgum, Pader)
  • Mobile libraries to service rural areas
